It is amazing how easy it is to forget that you are still mortal while on vacation. In my own town, I often marvel at the stupidity of tourists, But when I am a tourist myself, I definitely end up in the running for idiot of the week award. You would be amazed at how cavalier the jet ski rental place was about safety. They had us sign a legal disclaimer – they never forget that – but they gave us only the most cursory explanation about how to ride jet skis. After a brief safety lecture, they let us out on the bay all but unsupervised. They said jet skiing was easy, but I soon found out that they were mistaken.

If you are ever going to take out jet ski rentals, let me give you some free advice: don’t do it on the ocean. Especially, don’t go out on the ocean around Hawaii. Whatever they say about the conditions that particular day, it is likely to be too much for you. Even on a calm day, the surf can get pretty big. Of course, we found this out the hard way. As soon as we had boarded the jet ski rentals, we were flying across the waves almost completely out of control. My children almost collided two times before I stopped it. We decided to take the rentals back for a partial refund, believing that safety was more important than one fun day. The guy wouldn’t refund any money, even though we had only been out for about 20 minutes. Honestly, it didn’t matter too much to me. I was just happy to be alive.

If you have contemplated jet ski rentals in the past, remember this: they are dangerous pieces of equipment. You would actually do better to let your kids power motorboats unsupervised than to let them take jet skis on the water. My friend thought I was being silly when I started looking into how to patent an invention. I guess I have always been seen as somewhat of a crackpot within my group of friends – not without reason. I am always drawn to far out ideas and unusual concepts. Part of it is intellectual curiosity, but another part of it is a simple love of novelty. I like the idea of thinking something that no one has ever thought before, even if it isn’t the most sound and rational thought. So when I began the process of filing for an invention patent, everyone thought it was something crackpot and insane.

The fact that I wouldn’t talk about it did not do anything to dissuade my friends from their opinions. It wasn’t that I was afraid of them stealing my invention patents or anything. I really trust my friends deeply, but I don’t believe in discussing projects while I am in the middle of them. Once I starts talking, I never managed to finish my project usually. I thought that, once I had filed for my invention patents, I would talk their ears off about it until they wished I had never mentioned it. In the meantime, however, I wanted to keep my mouth shut.

Patenting an invention is harder than you might think. Invention patents, you see, require quite a few steps. First off, you have to make sure that no one has design something similar to what you are building before – no easy task. After that, however, it only gets harder. The numbers can be mystifying to most people, what does it all mean? You go in once a year for a physical and your health care provider want to draw a little blood too. The results come in and you’re frantically trying to write them down, unsure of what they mean or what questions to ask. But also a great responsibility. You are responsible for your own intent. When you intend to harm someone, then you are responsible for the results of that. But when you just want to take care of yourself with no intent to harm anyone – such as want some time alone when your partner wants to spend time with you – then you are not responsible for your partner’s upset.

When the wounded, programmed critical part of you takes over and tells you that doing what you want with no intent to harm anyone is wrong, that is when you will feel unhealthy guilt. Unhealthy guilt also arises when someone blames you for his or her feelings and you take on the blame. Many people have learned to blame others for their feelings rather than take responsible for their own feelings. When you accept this blame, it is because you want to believe that you can control others’ feelings. You will feel unhealthy guilt when you accept blame for others’ feelings.

Healthy guilt is an important feeling and leads to positive action, but unhealthy guilt is a waste of energy.

He had loved Beth totally and was deeply grateful for the time he had with her. But Frank was actually fine. His grief came in waves, and he cried when it came. Then it washed through and he was fine again.

Frank was fine because Beth had not been the source of his sense of self. Frank had a strong loving inner adult who was connected with a spiritual source of love and wisdom. This was his Source, not Beth. Frank was a person who took full responsibility for his own pain and joy. He had never made Beth responsible for his feelings or his wellbeing.
Because he had never abandoned himself, he could miss Beth and grieve for her without feeling abandoned, lost, victimized and alone.

Gary, on the other hand, was not fine, no matter how much sadness he released, because Samantha had been his Source of love, his Higher Power. He had handed to her the job of defining his sense of self, so when she left, all he could feel was abandoned. Gary had handed his Inner Child – his feeling self – to Samantha. He had made Samantha responsible for his feelings, so when she left, he felt like an abandoned child. His Source of love had gone away.

Because Frank knew how to love himself, he knew how to love others. Within a couple of years, Frank was in another loving relationship.

Gary found another relationship within six months of losing Samantha, and six months after that was again alone. Until Gary decides to learn to take responsibility for his own feelings and needs, he will likely continue to lose relationship after relationship, and continue to be stuck in feeling like a victim of the women in his life.
