Born in Maryland in 1956, the talk show presenter, Montel Williams has had an extremely varied career. Before show business beckoned, he served 22 years in the military and was decorated. His service was in the US Marine Corps and the US Navy and he participated in the invasion of Grenada.

His current career began in 1991 when he hosted The Montel Williams Show. He was awarded a Daytime Emmy, five years later, for Outstanding Talk Show Host. The show has been a big success, broadcasting to the USA, Australia, the UK, Denmark and Norway. It is one of the more uplifting shows of its kind and often reunites divided families and finds lost loved ones. Psychic performer Sylvia Brown appears on the show, once a week, to give psychic readings for the guests.

In addition to his talk show success, which gave him his household name status, Montel Williams has enjoyed an acting career. He has been a guest on several television series and has also performed in off-Broadway productions. His military background proved useful for his role as a Navy SEAL in several episodes of the drama series, JAG. Williams took the role of a judge in the soap opera, All My Children in 2002. He appeared as himself in the same show, in the following year. He has also made guest appearances in My Name is Earl, Touched By An Angel and American Dreams.

In 1999, Williams was diagnosed with Multiple Scleroses and he founded the Montel Williams MS Foundation to raise money for research in to the illness. The Foundation has raised over $1 million and all the money goes to fund research with the administration costs being covered by Montel Williams personally and by business organizations. Many fundraising methods are used, such as walkathons and bikeathons. There have also been golf matches, luncheons and lawn mowing competitions.

Williams has written a book, with Lawrence Grobel, about his experiences of MS and his near death incident in hospital. His book, Mountain, Get Out of My Way: Life Lessons and Learned Truths is an inspirational book, outlining Williams’ philosopher of life. His touchstone for raising children is to teach restraint, respect and responsibility. He also presents a 3 disc DVD called Living Well – Dollars and Sense, in which financial experts give advice. Williams has taken his life experiences and turned them into a positive message, remaining an influential personality.

There was a time when organizations were known by the size of their office spaces. Video games have come a long way since they first gained huge popularity in the 80s. What happened was that newer and faster machines were built, and that meant they got smaller and smaller through the decades. None of my students believe me when I tell them, but I was not always good at math. As a matter of fact, when I was just beginning to take algebra, I was absolutely terrible at it. These days I here about masters programs, and how everyone should strive for that MBA in order to vie with the millions of others. I can only wonder if it will soon be a PHD that’s essential.

Many people go after their higher education with one simple goal in mind. They want the job! This is what college is all about. So many individuals tackle that four-year education in order to attain a great career afterwards. It’s very simple math; college = good salary. I know this because it’s what I heard from my peers all through college. They wanted a good career to provide for a good lifestyle. Then there were the select few who shot for the masters programs on top of their BA or BS. I admired these people. There was no way I was interested in grunting my way through masters programs after the first four years of homework, mid-terms and finals. It sounded dismal at best. Then again, that higher level of achievement is definitely well respected in the corporate world. The ones who choose the masters programs tend to go into management. So maybe imagining yourself as the boss with a better salary will drive you toward that master’s degree.

It’s typically another two years. So if you’re young and planning out that college education, why not go for the masters programs right of the bat. Instead of finishing at age 22, you’ll probably be done by age 24. The MBA is certainly worth your time and effort. Imagine how far ahead of the competition it places you.

I absolutely love it and have several cups everyday. I also suffer from stomach problems and have for many years. About eight years ago I was diagnosed with an ulcer and have since been diagnosed with acid reflux disease. I was surprised to find out that acid reflux disease runs in my family and I began to think that it was more a matter of genetics than anything else. After several discussions with my primary physician, I had to rethink this assumption and instead turn my focus on my own habits and diet. Perhaps my zealous love of coffee was doing me some harm.

It is no secret that coffee can be very acidic. Because of the amount of coffee I tend to drink I had to wonder if all the coffee was causing or, at the very least, exacerbating the acid reflux. To test this theory I begrudgingly went in search of low acid coffee. I was only able to find one brand of low acid coffee at my local grocery store. It was Folger’s Simply Smooth. Many of you I am sure have seen the commercial for simply smooth and the slogan “welcome back the second cup.”

I decided to give the low acid coffee a shot. I have to admit that when it comes to coffee I have become very spoiled. I am used to having deliciously flavored coffees as well as sinfully sweet creamers to go with. Switching to the low acid coffee was not as hard as I thought it would be but switching to a non-flavored coffee was a bit of a shock for me. What can I say? I have been coffee spoiled.

Surprisingly enough, after a week of drinking only low acid coffee I did notice some improvements with my acid reflux. I was not getting heartburn nearly as often, and when I did, it was not as severe. I had to admit that the doctor was right and part of my problem was due to my own habits. I suppose that giving out extremely yummy coffee for a slightly less flavorful but more and beneficial coffee is worth it.

Have you ever stopped to think about why you develop relationships with some people and not others? You will get an impression of a person and that will determine if you want to get to know them better or not. I am a very opinionated person. As a result there are times when I make snap judgments about people. It has taken me many years to realize how wrong this is because my judgments are not always accurate. As a result I limited who I had as friends, and kept good people at a distance. I have tried to adjust this through the years because one of the people I had thought was not worth my time has become one of my best friends.

When I first met my friend we worked together. She wore off beat clothes, smoked and constantly complained about her husband. Her self-esteem was quite low and this came across as the inability to make a decision. She was also quite hyper active so she would jump from one project to the next without completing them. Then as deadlines approached she would be stressing and working on several things at once. As time went by I realized that once she finished the projects they were high quality work. I take a great pride in the work we did so this interested me about her. We were both assigned to a joint new project and we were sent out of town for a three day training. The training started early on a Monday morning so we traveled on a Sunday and stayed at a hotel. We were limited on our expenses so we needed to share a room. I was concerned about how this would work out. On the way to the hotel I found out that she likes to go to casinos to gamble. I also like to gamble so we talked about the different casinos we had been to. There was a large casino close to our hotel so after we checked in we decided to go there for the evening. I had always played slot machines rather than the card games. She told me that her favorite game was let it ride. I told her that I had never played. She convinced me to sit at a table with her and play for a while. I soon found that I loved the game of let it ride. Second, I want to learn sign language because of its utility. I can say with certainty that I’ll have a chance to use my ASL skills at some point in my life. Whether it’s helping a hearing impaired customer when I’m at work, or carrying on a casual conversation with someone I meet at the gym, there’s bound to be ample opportunity for me to apply my knowledge in practical situations. That’s more than I can say about my friends who studied Japanese for all four years of college, and then never spoke another syllable of it after they left campus!

Once I decided to learn sign language, I just had to find a class that I could attend. Since my work hours are always changing, I didn’t want to commit to specific evening or weekend hours at my local community college. More and more of my friends are turning to home schooling because they are disappointed with their public schools. I know this is something that I will never do because I do not have the patience. I would love to think that I could teach my daughter on my own, but there’s just no way it would never work. You do not have to be in therapy or counseling to look at these things. Self reflection is good for the mind and the soul. I was reminded of this recently due to my daughter.

My daughter belonged to 4-H. She had been a member since she was ten years old. She was then sixteen. She had thought about quitting that year because she has so many other things that she is involved with at school, but she has friends that are still involved so she decided to stay in. One of the adult advisors asked her if she would take part in the leadership skills training seminar that is offered in Chicago. This is a national course that only a select few members are invited to attend. My daughter was very honored and excite about the invitation. She could not wait to tell me all about it.

The office I work at is close to our home. I was surprised when my receptionist told me that my daughter was there to see me. I told the receptionist to send her in. My daughter was actually glowing she was so excited when she came in. She told me about the invitation for leadership skills training. Her excitement was being selected and also the trip to Chicago. I was excited for her, but I also knew that this meant taking on a leadership role in the 4-H community that would be quite time consuming. I asked her if she was ready to give up some other things to take on this role. She had not thought beyond the leadership skills training course. She was not considering that this would put her in a position to train others and to lead several groups of 4-H members. I assured her that I thought she would be very good at this, but I wanted her to accept the invitation to the leadership skills training with a full understanding of what was expected of her. She decided that she wanted to do this.

My daughter is now twenty six years old and is the youngest woman to be the CEO of the company she works for. Her decision to take of the leadership skills training and the responsibilities that accompanied it allowed her to grow in maturity beyond her years. I am so proud of her and the wonderful way she leads her company. I am glad that she was given an opportunity and that she chose to take it.

In the movies, officers often flash their law enforcement badges, and no one thinks twice. It is as if once people see a law enforcement badge, they are completely convinced of the legitimacy of the authority of the officer. This has always fascinated me.
